Germany Expresses Concern Over China’s Rare Earth Export Restrictions
(MENAFN) Germany on Friday voiced “concern” over China’s restrictions on rare earth exports, which limit processing and manufacturing technologies and bar cooperation with foreign firms without government approval.
“We have repeatedly expressed ‘our concern’ over the rare earth export control; however, we are in ‘intensive discussions to find an appropriate solution,’” said Economic Ministry deputy spokesman Tim-Niklas Wentzel during a press briefing in Berlin.
Germany relies heavily on China for raw materials, especially critical minerals such as rare earths, graphite, and lithium—resources vital to high-tech sectors including electric vehicles and electronics. Analysts warn this dependence carries serious economic risks, a concern intensified by Beijing’s recent export controls, which threaten potential supply chain disruptions and production halts in Germany.
In response, German authorities are pursuing measures to strengthen raw material security. These include expanding international partnerships, increasing domestic processing capabilities, and enhancing recycling initiatives.
At the same briefing, Wentzel also noted China’s recent decision to suspend the rare earth export restrictions on the United States for one year, following talks between President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in South Korea.
“This is the first good sign of easing tensions in the conflict between the USA and China,” Wentzel said.
Beijing confirmed it would “suspend the implementation of relevant export control measures announced on Oct. 9 for one year and will study and refine specific plans.” The Chinese statement added that it will make "corresponding adjustments" to countermeasures against U.S. tariffs, with both sides agreeing to continue extending certain tariff exclusion measures.
