China Unveils Plan for Global AI Governance Body to Shape Future

(MENAFN) At the opening of the 2025 World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai on Saturday, Chinese Premier Li Qiang unveiled a plan to form a World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization aimed at fostering global collaboration and shared governance in AI development.

Li announced China’s readiness to partner with other nations on joint technological research and to champion inclusive growth within the AI sector.

“No matter how science and technology change, it should be used and controlled by humans and developed in the direction of good and inclusiveness,” he said. “Artificial intelligence should also become an international public product for the benefit of mankind.”

The three-day event, themed Global Solidarity in the AI Era, attracted over 1,000 participants from government, academia, and industry sectors.

In his keynote, Li reiterated President Xi Jinping’s directive to advance AI innovation while prioritizing its safe and ethical deployment.

A statement released by the Chinese Foreign Ministry highlighted Li’s reference to the rapid advancements in large language models, multimodal AI systems, and embodied intelligence as transformative forces reshaping economies and everyday life.

He stressed that these breakthroughs present both unprecedented opportunities and risks, necessitating coordinated global efforts.

Li outlined three strategic priorities: broadening open access to AI technologies, enhancing international cooperation in research and talent exchange, and establishing a unified global governance framework for AI.

In a recorded message, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres echoed the call for inclusive and secure AI development through strong international collaboration, reinforcing China’s appeal for a wider consensus on AI governance.
